A Review of the Theories of Wahdat al-Wujud (Unity of Existence) and Wahdat ash-Shuhud (Unity of Witnessing) in the Light of Imam Rabbani's Letters

Abstract

Imam Rabbani (may God have mercy on him) first clarified that he too was initially affiliated with the concept of Wahdat al-Wujud (Unity of Existence), but then God guided him to the right path, and he reached the level of Wahdat ash-Shuhud (Unity of Witnessing). Then, Imam Rabbani (may God have mercy on him) explained the reasons and states of Wahdat al-Wujud, and addressed various objections raised against this doctrine, providing detailed answers to each. This resulted in a complete understanding of the doctrine, and he also explained the status of the statements made by those who claim to be affiliated with Wahdat al-Wujud, stating that their words are based on their own subjective experiences and are rooted in their overwhelming love for God . Imam Rabbani then proceeded to explain the underlying reasons and spiritual states associated with Wahdat al-Wujud, addressing various objections and criticisms leveled against this doctrine. He provided detailed and insightful responses to each of these concerns, thereby affording a complete understanding of the doctrine.
